Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg (1844-1900) together with his new wife, Princess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, taken in May 1874 shortly after their marriage at St. Petersburg on 23rd January 1874. Maria was the only daughter of Tsar Alexander II (pictured seated together with his fourth son, Alexei Alexandrovich). Since the Crimean War, Queen Victoria had engendered a firm dislike of the Russians and when Maria was suggested by Princess Alice as a bride for 'Affie', she agreed half-heartedly and did not attend the wedding. Alfred and Maria had four daughters, including Queen Marie of Romania and one son, Alfred.
