Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain, formerly Princess Ena of Battenberg (1887-1969), second child and only daughter of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg pictured in Red Cross uniform in about 1916. Ena's reforming activities were looked upon with suspicion in Spain where it was considered shameful for a woman other than a nun to go near a sick man; the country had no trained nurses at all. Ena began by organising lotteries to raise money to build hospitals and establish nursing training. In 1916 she founded the Spanish Red Cross under her personal direction. She was also president of the anti-Tuberculosis League.
