Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor at the opening of the Vimy Ridge memorial in France in July 1936. Vimy Ridge was one of the first successful attacks during the trench stalemate of World War I when the four divisions of the Canadian corps took the 60m high Vimy Ridge on the 9th April (Easter Monday) 1917. Today, the memorial stands to the 11,000 Canadian troops who lost their lives during the Great War, many of them during the fight for Vimy ridge.
