A tribute from Sir Winston Churchill's constituents. As he celebrated his eighty-fourth birthday with his family at Chartwell, Mr David McFall was putting the finishing touches to the clay model of his statue of the great statesman. Today it stands in Woodford Green but at the time of its unveiling, Woodford residents were unsure about it. McFall defended criticism of the statue with, "I have attempted to portray Sir Winston as a man of intellect. I wasn't making a Toby-jug you know". His aim was to convey the forcefulness and drive in Sir Winston Churchill's character, expressing it in the jutting lower lip and the restless pose.
