This picture is from Ottoman times and depicts women sitting, having been drinking wine, in traditional costume, on the Island of Kos (or Cos) (Turkish - 'Istankoy', Italian - 'Coo', English - 'Stanchio'. Four kilometres from the coast of Southern Anatolia, opposite Bodrum. Was a part of the Turkish region of Caria. Ruled by the Ottomans for 400 years- transferred to Italy in 1912. In World War Two - taken over by Germany (until 1945). Then became protectorate of the UK, who ceded it to Greece in 1947. Big tourist area nowadays. Hippocrates ('The Father of Medicine') lived there in the 5th century BC.
