As part of their series on the education of British Youth, the Illustrated London News ran a feature on Stonyhurst College, Lancashire. Stonyhurst was founded in Lancashire 1794 as a Roman Catholic boys' school in the Jesuit tradition. Here boys can be seen (clockwise from top left)examining specimens in the James Everard Lord Arundel library and museum, doing 'prep' at their desks, enjoying swimming in the river Hodder at Blackwheel, watching a cricket match and playing in the orchestra in the Academy Room. The construction of a new block is also shown, with Fr. J. Tranmar(busar) and Mr. T. Bailey(clerk of works) in the foreground.
