The biggest blaze of the decade was fought at Wilson's Wharf, near Tooley Street, Southwark, in the summer of 1971. It was the same location that cost the life of London's Fire Chief, James Braidwood in 1861. A number of firefighters were seriously injured when a flashover occurred and others. like the fireman pictured, were affected by the toxic smoke from the disused cold store warehouse.
