Mont Cornillet 20 May 1917: an intensive bombardment by French 400mm guns sited at Mourmelon le Petit blew in the ventilation shaft of a complex of three parallel tunnels under Mt Cornillet. These tunnels were able to shelter over 600 men and during the bombardment the access tunnels were blocked and the inmates of the complex suffocated. The French then blew up any further access points to prevent the Germans re-suing them and they were not re-oped until 1933 but the presence of gas prevented further investigation. Bewteen 1973 and 1984 French & German engineers entered the tunnels and removed almost 600 bodies, most of which are buried in the German cemetery of Warmeriville near Reims along with two French prisoners who were also killed.
