John Hatfield - Con Artist (1758-1803). He claimed to be the Honourable Alexander Augustus Hope, officer, gentleman, member of Parliament and younger brother of the Earl of Hopetoun whilst seducing Mary Robinson, known as the Maid of Buttermere, daughter of the landlord of the Fish Inn. He wooed and won the local beauty and the two were married in a church wedding on October 2nd, 1802. However, the game was soon up, as publicity generated by the marriage led the real Earl of Hopetoun to renounce Hatfield as a fraud and he was consequently arrested for forgery.
