Stylised illustration showing the traditional carriage drive by the King and Queen down the course at Royal Ascot, one of the highlights of the summer social calendar. Ascot is generally held a fortnight after the Derby and dates from the reign of Queen Anne. The first race was won on 11 August 1711, by a horse owned by the Duke of St. Albans, son of Charles II and Nell Gwynne. The Royal Procession up the course on Gold Cup Day was instituted by George IV in 1823. One of the most famous sights of the Season, the King and/or Queen, who are in residence at Windsor, drive the length of the course in a four-horse landau driven by postillions in Ascot livery and accompanied by the Master and Huntsmen of the Royal Buckhounds.
