Nimy Bridge over the Mons-Conde Canal in Belgium was fiercely defended by the BEF in the first battle of Mons in 1914. Lieutenant Maurice Dease and Private Sidney Godley were both awarded the Victoria Cross, posthumous for their bravery in defending the bridge.
