'An illustrated paper serviette. A souvenir produced 'In Loving Memory of the Men, Women & Children killed in The London Air Raid on Wednesday June 13th 1917. Around noon on 13th June 1917, the Germans launched the first daylight air raid over London. Seventeen Gotha biplanes were flown from Belgium, dropping bombs over various locations in East London. A total of 104 people were killed and 423 injured in the raid, including several children, some of whose names and ages, ranging from 5 to 12, are listed poignantly on this souvenir. One bomb exploded in the infants class of the Upper North Street School in Poplar, killing 18 and maiming a further 27 children, most of them 5 year olds.
