Leaves from a soldier's hospital sketch book. Illustration by Harold ('Pat') Earnshaw (1886-1937), artist and husband of Mabel Lucie Attwell. Pat joined the Artists' Rifles during the First World War and was a Lance-Corporal in the Sussex Regiment when he had his right arm blown off on the Somme. He was released from hospital in 17 July 1917 and astoundingly, this picture was published in The Graphic on 11 August that year. Earnshaw taught himself to draw with his left hand instead, and these humorous scenes of hospital life for wounded soldiers is a fine example of his determination to overcome his injury and continue as an illustrator.
