A hand-painted suffragette ceramic figure of a black African woman wearing a corset and short bloomers. In her right hand she holds a brown club, and in her left hand, a sign which reads, 'Votes for Women'. Her mouth is wide open, and her eyes rather 'wild'. The figure was made by Schafer & Vater, a firm founded in 1890 in Germany. Often referred to as the figure of Sojourner Truth, the African-American abolitionist and Women's Rights Activist. (real name Isabella Baumfree, 1797-1883) Height 19cm (7.5')
