A wounded soldier explaining the positions at an action in which he was involved to two nurses in hospital with the aid of matches. A photograph of King Albert over his bed perhaps suggests he is Belgian which is highly probable as the picture was taken at the Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital at Hayle Place, Maidstone, Kent, which cared for both British and Belgian soldiers. The house was lent by Lord Romney expressly for such a purpose. Its commandant was Mrs Wilson-Smith.
