Torii (gate) at the Shinto Shrine at Atago Hill, Tokyo, Japan. A torii is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the profane to the sacred. The Atago Shrine in Minato, Tokyo, Japan is a Shinto shrine built in 1603 (the eighth year of the Keicho era) on the order of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.
