West African 'executioner's hat', 1873 (c). Acquired by a soldier of the 15th Yorkshire East Riding Regiment during the 2nd Ashanti War (1873-1874). Made of fur of greater cane rat, otherwise known as a Grasscutter. Worn by warriors, rather than executioners. Red shells denote commonality.
