'Shanghai'. The Treaty of Nanking (Nanjing), 1842, opened the port to foreign trade. In 1843 Captain Balfour, British Consul, accepted a site (partly marshland) granted for foreign settlement. This is the site (the Bund) in the British concession in 1869.
