P.O.W. Camp Theatricals. "French Without Tears" performed by British POWs at German prisoner of war camp Oflag IX/AZ in September 1943. It is a matter of pride to the players that the performance should not be a mere amateur show, but a slick and well-finished production. The greatest difficulty is naturally in the female parts; these call for a very high degree of skill in acting and, as of course there are no women in the camp, consultations take place as to how a woman walks, sits down, lights a cigarette etc. Costumes are usually hired out by the Germans.
