'A Yeoman of the Guard, attending Queen Elizabeth on a Progress', c1800. A Yeoman Warder (also known as a Beefeater) of the time of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) wearing the royal badge and mounted on a horse. The Yeomen Warders were formed in 1485, and are still ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. They are responsible for safeguarding the British crown jewels.
