'Joannes Gower', c1727. Portrait of English poet John Gower (c1330-1408), a friend and contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer. He is known primarily for three major works, "Speculum Meditantis" (or Mirour de l'Omme), "Vox Clamantis", and "Confessio Amantis", volumes of which are shown here below the portrait, together with a page showing his tomb at St Saviours Church, Southwark, London.
