Kalapana. Woman walking along the solidified lava flow that buried most of the town of Kalapana, Hawaii. During an eruption in 1990, lava flows from the Kupa'ianaha vent of the Kilauea volcano destroyed and partly buried most of Kalapana. The nearby town of Kaimu and Kaimu Bay were also destroyed, both of which now lie buried beneath more than 15 metres of lava. The lava flow created a new coastline.
