Speculative illustration of a ringed brown dwarf illuminated by a nearby star. The rings are seen edge-on and therefore, like Saturn's rings, appear as a thin line bisecting the brown dwarf along its equator. Also visible are two moons, or planets, orbiting the brown dwarf. The starward side of this brown dwarf reveals a gas giant similar in appearance to the planet Jupiter. Unlike Jupiter, this brown dwarf is 13 to 65 times more massive while its diameter is only slightly greater than Jupiter's due to its greater density. Also, unlike Jupiter, the shaded side reveals a relatively dim magenta glow, a result of lithium and/or deuterium fusion.
