World Wide Web by Berners-Lee. Abstract for the updated March 1989 (here dated May 1990) proposal by British physicist Tim Berners-Lee (born 1955) for the World Wide Web (WWW). Between 1989 and 1994, working at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory), Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau developed the web, a global network for information sharing based on hypertext documents ('hypertext' is mentioned at lower left). In 1994, Berners-Lee founded the Web Consortium W3C, the International Web standards body of which he is the director. He was knighted in 2004.
