'Marie Tudor' by Hugo, 19th-century illustration. This scene shows the Queen of England Mary I (Mary Tudor, 1516-1558) and her executioner (left). This 1833 play was written by French poet, novelist and dramatist Victor Hugo (1802-1885). The play portrays the rise and fall of a lover of the queen (the fictional Fabiano Fabiani). The queen has him jailed for being unfaithful and he is subsequently executed despite her attempts to spare him. Artwork published in Paris in 1860, in an edition of the works of Hugo by Alexandre Houssiaux.
