'Jerusalem Delivered', 19th-century illustration. This funeral scene with crusader knights illustrates an epic poem about the 11th-century First Crusade by Italian poet Torquato Tasso (1544-1595). Tasso was an influential poet of the Italian Renaissance. His most important work (illustrated here) was 'Gerusalemme liberata' (1581, 'Jerusalem Delivered'). The poem consists of 20 sections (cantos). This scene is from the third canto, showing the battlefield death scene for the character Dudon of Consa, with the eulogy delivered by one of the leaders of the crusade, Godfrey of Bouillon. Artwork published in Paris in 1810.
