Ambulocetus prehistoric whale ancestor, illustration. This aquatic mammal lived from 47 to 41 million years ago, during the Eocene. It is thought to have been fully aquatic, reaching lengths of several metres, similar in size to today's sea lions. It forms part of the evolutionary tree that resulted in modern cetaceans (whales).
