Apollo 11 jettison bag on the Moon. The jettison bags were used to dispose of rubbish and human waste and excreta (including urine and faeces). This jettison bag was deposited on the Moon's surface during the first EVA (extravehicular activity) performed by Neil Armstrong. The jettison bag is under the descent stage of the Eagle lunar module used during the Apollo 11 mission, the first to land on the Moon. At centre is the south footpad, with a probe to its left inserted into the lunar surface. Along with the equipment left on the surface, the jettison bags were also left behind. Future missions may study the contents of the jettison bags to see if any microbial life has survived. Photographed by Armstrong on 20 July 1969. This is the first photograph that was taken on the surface of the Moon.
