'Scene of Martyrdom, Canterbury Cathedral', 1929. Canterbury Cathedral was founded in 597, completely rebuilt c1070-1077, enlarged at the beginning of the 12th century, and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174. Archbishop, Thomas Becket, was murdered in the North transept by knights of King Henry II and the memorial screen made the cathedral a place of pilgrimage.
