Estonia; island of Saaremaa (German/Swedish 謘el); village of Valjala (German: Wolde): Lutheran St Martin`s Church (German: evangelisch-lutherische St. Martinskirche of 1227 AD; main partal facade. The originally catholic church is named in honour of Martin of Tours. It was built starting in 1227 and is the oldest church on island of Saaremaa and the oldest church in Estonia; as well. Valjala was a stronghold of pagan Estonians and became famous with the battle in winter 1227; which was successful for German knights and crusaders. Let by the bishop of Riga; the Teutonic order took over the government of the island. Most important artefact in the church is the romanic font (German: Taufstein) of 1270. In 1261; after risings of pagan Estonians; the church was fortified. After 1360; further decoration was started. There are still rests of frescoes (13th century) on the northern wall of the chorus. Restauration of the church happened from 1992 to 1994. The church was built on a pagan burial sight.
