Ireland; Dublin; Docklands: Famine Memorial (detail); realized 1997 by sculptor Rowan Gillespie; near Talbot Bridge; Northern bank of river Liffey. The Famine Memorial records the catastrophe of the Great Famine 1845 - 1850 and the following migration of one million irish people to Northern America and Australia. The live size bronze statues show a group of people before entering the migration ship. The Memorial was unveiiled by Mary Robinson. it was sponsored by Norma Smurfit; a descendant of migrants from Ireland.
