Ireland; Co. Donegal; near village of Burt: "Sun castle" Grianan of Aileach (built ca. 1700 BC). The ringfort 2 km off Burt is also called Grian谩n Ailigh; anglicised also Greenan Ely or Greenan Fort. The hillfort atop the 244 m high Greenan Mountain near Burt dates most probably back to 1700 BC. The story of this so called "sun castle" is heavily present in irish mythology; legends; folk tales and history. A most interesting legend tells that the cashel was a place of worship to the sun; the palace of hibernation of Graine; the Celtic Sun-Goddess. Another story names Dagda; highest God and King of legendary Tuatha de Dannan; as builder of the fort. it should protect the grave of his son Aedh. Aso; Nuada of the Silver Hand may have a royal burial place; on hilltop. As well; the sleeping warriors of the Ui Neill may wait near the cashel; awaiting the call to awake and to rearm for fight.The hillfort is one of only five Irish locations marked on Ptolemy of Alexandria's 2nd century (around 150 AD) map of the world. the 1960s St. Aengus Chruch in Burt; also called Burt Toman Catholic Chapel; was built. The church won the prestigious RIAI Triennial Gold Medal in 1971; only a few years after its completion. The building was declared Ireland's 鈥楤uilding of the Century' (20th century); in the late 1990s. As well; the architect of the church; Liam McCormick; got European Awards. It is inspired by bronze age built Grianan of Aileach.
