Great Britain (United Kingdom); Northern Ireland; Causeway Coastal Route: ruins of Dunluce Castle (built 13th/14th century). In 13th century; Richard 觛 de Burgh; 2nd Earl of Ulster; built the first castle at Dunluce. Its irish name is D鷑 Libhse ("strong fortress"). Earliest castle possession of the McQuillan family was 1513. Oldest buildings of the castle are two large drum towers about 9 metres (30 ft) in diameter on eastern side; serving as a stronghold for the McQuillans when they became lords of the Route. Later on; Dunluce Castle went to the chief of Clan MacDonnell of Antrim and the Clan MacDonald of Dunnyveg (Scotland). In 1584; Dunluce Castle was conquered by the MacDonnells; who became first Earls of Antrim. In 1588; the Girona; a galleass from the Spanish Armada; stranded near Dunluce Castle. With the money earned by selling the cargo; Dunluce Castle was renovated. In 1693; a storm blew down the kitchen of the castle. However; there are still remains of a kitchen; near the castle. In 2011; archeologists found the remains of the village of Dunluce; which was destroyed to the ground in 1641; during the last Irish Uprising.
