An engraving depicting an Irish crossing-sweeper. There were numerous crossing sweepers such as this in London: both adults and children of the poorest classes tended particular crossings, and for payment, they would sweep the road clear of dirt and horse droppings so that pedestrians could cross without getting dirty. Dated 19th century.
