First atomic artillery shell detonation. Mushroom cloud rising (centre) following the detonation of an atomic artillery shell fired from an artillery gun (see T165/0164) at 08:30 local time on 25 May 1953, at the Nevada Test Site, USA. This was the first and last time an artillery gun (nicknamed 'Atomic Annie') was used to fire an atomic weapon. The projectile was fired a distance of 10 kilometres, and exploded with the force of 15,000 tons of TNT. Flares (right) are being used to measure the blast wave. The test itself, named Grable, was the 10th in the Operation Upshot-Knothole series.
