Spine in ankylosing spondylitis. Frontal X-ray of the lumbosacral (lower) spine of a 56-year-old woman with ankylosing spondylitis. This is a condition where the spinal joints become progressively inflamed, and eventually the spine fuses. The severity of cases can vary from mild to severe and immobilising. Treatment is with physiotherapy and anti-inflammatory drugs. The pelvic bones are seen at bottom, and ribs are seen at top.
