Pterodactylus antiquus fossil. Pterodactylus is an extinct genus of pterosaurs, whose members are commonly known as pterodactyls. Pterodactylus antiquus is thought to be the one and only species known. It is considered as transitional between mammals and birds, being the first pterosaur species identified as a flying reptile. Fossil is from Solnhofen Jurassic limestones in Bavaria, southern Germany. Actual width of fossil tip to tip is 430 mm.
