The surviving section of the Lanormant Trireme bas relief depicting the ship Paralos with it's commander and oarsmen. Paralos was an Athenian state trireme that participated in sacred and state missions. It was named after the hero Paralos, the inventor of navigation. Late 5th century BC. The relief is an important record of the layout of the oars and crew of an Athenian trireme. The top level depicts the Thranite oarsmen in an outrigger above the 2 lower deck levels, Zygian and Thalamian respectively. The design of the outrigger allowed the oars from all 3 levels to be of identical length. In 1987, Olympias, a meticulously researched reconstruction of a Trireme by British Naval Architect John Coates, was successfully launched from Piraeus, Athens.
