Ancient Greek bas relief, part of a grave stele in Pentelic marble. The figure of a nude youth practicing balancing a ball in the palaestra is depicted in low relief. A Palaestra is the site of an ancient Greek wrestling school. His folded himation lies on the pillar and he is watched by his young male servant holding an aryballos and strigil. An aryballos was a small spherical or globular flask with a narrow neck. It was used to contain perfume or oil, and is often depicted in vase paintings being used by athletes during bathing. The strigil would have been use for the cleansing of the body by scraping off dirt, perspiration, and oil that was applied before bathing.
