Polarised light micrograph of stone cell clusters, or sclereids, in the fruit of a pear (Pyrus sp.) tree. Stone cells give support to the soft tissue of the pear. The thick cellulose walls of the sclereids are impregnated with lignin, the main component of wood. Magnification: x186 when printed 10 cm high.
