Illustration of a cross-section of the OSIRIS-REx (Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer) spacecraft's Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) sample return system. Dashed lines show the direction of flow of high pressure nitrogen gas that is directed at the surface of the asteroid 101955 Bennu. The gas kicks dust, dirt and rocks into the TAGSAM head, where it is collected (red). This sample-return mission, part of the NASA New Frontiers programme, is being carried out by NASA and the University of Arizona. The spacecraft launched on 8 September 2016, arriving at the asteroid in December 2018. On 20th October 2020 the TAGSEM successfully collected a sample from Bennu's surface. The sample is scheduled to be returned to Earth in September 2023.
