The Second of May 1808: Charge of the Mamelukes', 1814 Artist: Francisco Goya. Commissioned in 1814, after the expulsion of Napoleon's army from Spain, Goya portrayed the citizens of Madrid as unknown heroes using crude weapons to attack a professional, occupying army. This did not go down well with the king - the paintings were not hung publicly until many years (and governments) later.
