Allied leaders at the Tehran Conference. From left to right: Soviet Union premier Joseph Stalin (1878-1953), US president Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) and UK prime minister Winston Churchill (1874-1965). From 28 November to 1st December 1943, the three heads of states gathered to discuss the opening of a second front against the axis powers during World War II. This second front, known as the Western Front, would liberate France from Nazi Germany occupation. At that time, only Stalin and the Soviets were fighting Nazi Germany on land on the Eastern Front.
