Route to Rome in Europe, 15th century. Known as the Romweg ('Way to Rome') map and dating from the 1490s, this map was produced by German astronomer, physician and cartographer Erhard Etzlaub. It was intended for pilgrims who planned to visit Rome (near top left) in the Holy Year of 1500. The map is orientated with south at top. This is the earliest printed road map of central Europe. The area covered ranges from Denmark (at bottom) to Naples (at top left in Italy). Paris is at far right, and Budapest at far left. Prague is at centre left and the Swiss Alps at upper centre. Scotland and Edinburgh at at bottom right.
