Map of Europe, 16th century. This 1572 map is from 'Geografia tavole moderne di geografia' (1575) by Paolo Forlani and Giacomo Gastaldi, and published in Rome by Antonio Lafreri. It is a navigational map, giving the names and locations of coastal towns and cities, and with compass roses and rhumb lines to aid navigation. The scale (lower right) is in Italian miles.
