XJF397628 The Gate of Calais, or O The Roast Beef of Old England, 1749 (engraving) by Hogarth, William (1697-1764); Private Collection; (add.info.: A sirloin of beef is carried from Calais harbour to an English tavern in the town, watched by hungry, ragged French soldiers (some Jacobites) and a fat friar in this satire on the French and Catholicism. The title is from a patriotic song by Richard Liveridge expressing similar anti-French & anti-Jacobite feelings. On his way home in 1748 Hogarth (left) was arrested as a suspected spy after trying to sketch the town\'s ancient drawbridge.); English, out of copyright.
