474083 In the Alhambra Palace, Granada (b/c, pencil and w/c on wove paper) by Roberts, David (1796-1864); 23.2x32.7 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: The Alhambra Palace at Granada was built from the mid 13th century onwards, during Islamic Arab rule in Spain. A throne area opens off this hall, which is splendidly decorated with tiles and painted plaster mouldings in abstract designs. This w/c was painted from sketches made by David Roberts during his 1832-33 visit to Spain. This was an unusual destination for a British artist at this time. Roberts later published prints of Spanish scenes. He was very concerned with the accuracy of the architecture in his views. ); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; Scottish, out of copyright.
