Magnesium burning in air. Magnesium is easy to ignite and burns in air with a bright white light producing magnesium oxide. Tongs are used to hold the burning magnesium. The atomic number is 12. Magnesium is an important ingredient in flares and fireworks and was once use as a filament in disposable flash bulbs for photography. The smoke shape is caused by a superheated air up-draught.
