Monkey being examined by a vet after flying on a US Air Force Aerobee sounding rocket. The rockets could reach a maximum altitude of 143 kilometres, and so entered space. Monkeys were sent on the rockets to determine if there were any negative effects from the acceleration, reduced gravity, or cosmic radiation encountered during the flight. Looking on is Brigadier General Wayne O. Kester (1906-1999). Photographed in March 1953.
