They have been mixing building mortar. One of the women is about to carry a load of the mortar on a board on her head up the ladder to the bricklayer above. In the background can be seen another woman near the top of a tall ladder, also carrying mortar to the bricklayer on the roof. The spire of St Nicholas\' Church is visible over the roofs of the houses.
